Conrad W. Baars
It has been said that the best word that describes Dr. Baars trajectory is excellency. He was born in the Netherlands, in the city of Rotterdam, on January 2, 1919. He passed away in October 18, 1981, the Mass of Burial was held in Saint Luke Catholic Church, in San Antonio (Texas).
Conrad W. Baars was a Catholic psychiatrist who studied human nature, man's psyche and spirit, and the healing of emotional illnesses. He blends in a wonderful synthesis Saint Thomas Aquinas' points of view with his research, especially in relation to emotions. His thought is very deep but his writings are easy to read and understand. Dr. Baars or Koert, as he was known to his next of kin and friends, was undoubtedly a great thinker, teacher and psychiatrist.
In Holland, during the dark hours of the II World War he was captured by the nazis and taken to the concentration camp in Buchenwald. After the war was over he traveled to the United States, were he met and married Mary Jean Kennedy (Mrs. Conrad W. Baars).
Koert meet Dr. Anna A.Terruwe, a Dutch psychiatrist with very deep ideas of how psychotherapy and healing had to reach the whole person, including man's spiritual dimension. That was the point when Baars began trying to apply Saint Thomas Aquinas' psychology to modern emotional problems, in close collaboration with Terruwe.
A fertile perspective of human integral health saw its way into several books and conferences. Conrad Baars is to be remembered as one of the more creative thinkers in psychology in the XX Century.
In her Epilogue to " Doctor of the Heart. An Autobiography", posthumously published, Mary Jean Baars, wrote in October 31, 1993 about her husband’s work: "unless and until we turn back to a God-centered world, we are not likely to produce cures in psychiatry and psychology which bring normalcy, happiness and peace to people."
Conrad Baars' life is a testimony of a Catholic trying to understand man in the light shed by Revelation. He surely followed Saint Thomas anthropology, but in doing so he was creating a new synthesis that will shed light in the 21st century.
His sons continue to follow his lead. They keep a web page
where a larger biographical profile can be read, as well as a short one
on Dr. Anne Terruwe.
Since an increasing importance is being attributed to Dr. Terruwe and her
proposals for mental and integral health, we have included our own profile
and a small bibliography, here in Allers, under Terruwe.
